maltatoday | SUNDAY • 6 JUNE 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 765. Common poppy THROUGHOUT late spring the extrovert Ferrari-red flowers of the common poppy (M. peprin ahmar) catch our eye. Poppies don't much like stable, undisturbed ground, they need soft, crumbly earth for their delicate stalks to break through. That's why they grow so readily on farmland that is conveniently tilled and nicely broken up for their minute seed to germinate. Poppies live life in the fast lane, growing from seed to maturity in just a few weeks. Well, they have to if they are to survive on land that's regularly ploughed. By the time the dry season comes knocking, the poppy plant will have run its course and produced my favourite part of the plant: the seed cap- sules. They are exquisite natural pepper pots, with holes in a ring around the edge to shed seed when swayed by the breeze, yet cun- ningly recessed so rain won't get in and clog the seed. Genius.
