maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JUNE 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 768. Peregrine falcon THE peregrine falcon (M. bies) is the undisputed bullet of the ani- mal kingdom. In aerial pursuit of prey it can clock 320kmh, making it the fastest living thing on earth (apart from people in machines). Many know the peregrine by its other name: the Maltese falcon, a moniker that came about thanks to history and a dash of Hollywood. Peregrines used to breed commonly around our seacliffs, feasting on other birds like gulls and doves. The Order of St John used to trap one or two every year to gift the King of Spain in return for their stay in Malta. But in the 20th century the species was shot to oblivion by our brave hunters, and for decades we only saw the occasional bird on migration. But in recent years a pair or two have nested on remote stretches of seacliff. Can we ever learn to share this rock with the bird that carries its name? THIS event is being organised by Friends of the Earth Malta as part of a project based on Solidarity within the European Union. Our aim is to highlight positive examples of values-led responses by the European Parliament and decision makers. According to a 2020 survey, the majority of Europeans are not satisfied with the solidari- ty between EU Member States in fighting the Coronavirus pandem- ic. During this live event we would like to bring out these elements through the questions which have been sent to us by Maltese citi- zens over the past few weeks. Questions will be asked directly to the 4 Maltese MEPs who will be asked to answer the questions directed to them by the participant.
