COVID-19: One death and 48 new cases registered Police leave notes not to leave beach bags unattended LAUR A CALLEJA COMMUNITY police officers patrolled sev- eral beaches last week- end, closing unattended bags by attaching police branded tags as part of a crime prevention cam- paign, The initiative was launched when officers doing routine beach pa- trols noticed that many beachgoers would leave their bags open, while they were swimming, with valuable items disa- ble and prone to-picking. "These tags are intended to serve as a deterrent to pick-pocketing and also to raise awareness," the police said. The concept of com- munity policing was launched two years ago in Mellieha, spreading to 11 more localities. The programme has been considered a success and has shown that the po- lice force is more effec- tive in its crime response prevention efforts if the community becomes a partner in its operations. Majjistral rangers targeted with threatening graffiti THE Heritage Parks Federa- tion has condemned attempts at intimidation of its rangers which have been occurring these last few days. The federation is made up of Din L-Art Helwa, Nature Trust and Gaia Foundation. The intimated has principal- ly been in the form of graffiti singling out rangers which has appeared in at least four local- ities. The rangers patrol Majjistral Park and Golden Bay beach. Their duties include stop- ping dumping, littering and off-roading in the park and also non-gas BBQs at Golden Bay beach. "This is well received by the public who appreciate the work done by so few rangers to keep the area clean and open to the public for the en- joyment of all," the federation said. The Heritage Parks Feder- ation has made a report to the police and asked for the continued cooperation of the public whilst condemning these vandal acts aimed at hindering the work done by the rangers.
