It's a small falcon, a light- weight version of the majestic peregrine, if you like. Hobbies are mi- gratory, and right now they are among the most common falcons we see here as they zoom overhead on their way to Africa. Still, they're never too hurried as to pass up the chance of a meal. Like all fal- cons, the hobby (M. seqer tal-hannieqa) is an accomplished predator, but due to its diminutive size it only tackles small fare, its speciality being large insects like dragonflies, grasshoppers, butterflies, etc. It swoops in on its hapless prey in full flight and snatches it deftly with its spindly talons, after which the snack is carefully transferred to the beak for the final crunch up!
