maltatoday | SUNDAY • 30 JANUARY 2022 6 THEATRE Sights are set on gold at Teatru Manoel THE stage is set to shine this February as Teatru Manoel pre- sents audiences with GOLD: Celebrating 50 Years of Music by Sweden's Most Famous Pop Group. The celebration, which in- cludes repertoire of much- loved ABBA hits that topped music charts worldwide, is not simply a pop performance, but a concept that draws on ele- ments from various performing arts, similar to musical theatre. Singers, musicians and dancers will come together in a sensa- tional production that rekin- dles the verve first ignited by the legendary quartet five dec- ades ago. Together with Teatru Ma- noel, making up the produc- tion team behind this scin- tillating line-up are Creative Artist Antoine Farrugia, Band Leader Melchior Busuttil and Choreographer Celaine Buha- giar, with a troupe of dancers bringing the music to life in stunning choreography against a backdrop that evokes the mood of the era. Adapting the distinctive vo- cals that give the band its un- mistakeable sound is a job fit only for the best that local talent has to offer. Audiences can expect to be wowed by the melodic voices of Jasmine Ab- ela, Kevin Borg, Martina Borg, Ludwig Galea, Michela Galea and Glen Vella. Strong vocal abilities backed by a live band will make it an exquisite expe- rience for all. "Even though the music is very much a product of its time, the enduring popularity of these hits has made them truly timeless," observes Te- atru Manoel CEO, Massimo Zammit. Indeed, fifty years on, the Swedish pop group's music continues to delight new gen- erations of music-lovers just as much as it did when the band first stepped onto the world stage. Their uplifting, heartfelt songs attract a multi-age fan- base – from those who lived and loved the '70s first-hand, to their very grandchildren who cannot resist singing along whenever one of the hits comes on. Ever keen to celebrate great art across a wide-ranging de- mographic, Teatru Manoel looks forward to receiving visitors of all ages this Febru- ary, for a performance that is bound to thrill and warm view- ers from the inside out – as on- ly the best music can. "We hope that audiences will enjoy the performance as much as we enjoyed putting it togeth- er," adds Mr Zammit. "It may be fifty years since the group first made its impression on the world, but it will be much longer before its contribution to music fades away. And we at Teatru Manoel want to make sure of that." Knowing ABBA and knowing the Manoel, we're ready to bet gold that this is true.
