16 NEWS COVID-19 maltatoday | THURSDAY • 24 MARCH 2022 KURT SANSONE THE number of drive-thru voting centres for COV- ID-positive people and others in mandatory quarantine have increased to seven for Satur- day's election, after a spike in infections. People who are positive for COVID-19 or are in manda- tory quarantine up to Friday 9pm should go and vote in these centres rather than the polling booth indicated on their voting document. The special arrangement was agreed ahead of the elec- tion to enable those in quar- antine to vote without being a risk to others. However, the spike in cases witnessed over the past cou- ple of weeks, primarily driven by mass political gatherings, has led to seven drive-thru centres being set up for Sat- urday. By Tuesday there were 2,723 active cases of COVID-19, ac- cording to the health author- ities. The drive-thru voting cen- tres are spread out across the country and are linked to par- ticular districts. They are as follows: Voters registered in the 2nd and 4th districts: Smart City, Kalkara Voters registered in the 1st and 6th districts: MCAST, Paola Voters registered in the 3rd and 5th districts: Ħal Far, Birżebbuġa Voters registered in the 7th and 11th districts: Ta' Qali Voters registered in the 10th and 12th districts: Pembroke Voters registered in the 8th and 9th districts: Life Sciences Park, San Ġwann Voters registered in the 13th district: Xewkija Voters will still have to take their voting document with them to be able to vote. Seven drive-thru voting centres for Saturday's election as COVID cases jump COVID-19 cases are on the rise as 375 new ones were registered on Wednesday, as per the figures published by the Health Ministry. Two men aged 87 and 93 have passed away while COVID-19 positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 626. Active cases stand at 2,969 after 127 re- coveries were registered. There are currently 63 coronavirus pa- tients being cared for at Mater Dei Hos- pital, of which one is in the ITU. The number shot up by more than 20 since Tuesday, when 41 had been registered. Until yesterday, 1,253,673 vaccine doses were administered, of which 348,922 were booster doses.
