maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 APRIL 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 811. Yellow Wagtail BIRDS are now seriously on the move. No doubt those crossing the Med are hindered somewhat by the rather windy weather that has dominated the region over the past weeks. But migration is in their blood, so cross they must. At this time of year, hundreds of millions fly from Africa to Europe to find a place to nest. Birds that cross over Malta come mostly via Libya or Tunisia, and they stop here to rest awhile and maybe grab a bite. One of these travellers is the yellow wagtail (M. isfar), a small, smart-looking, long-tailed character of an intense lemon yellow. Yellow wagtails love to travel in groups, sometimes in flocks hundreds strong. Their favourite habitats are wetlands and other humid places where they are sure to find mos- quitoes, their number one food.
