maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 MAY 2022 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 813. European Night Jar THE European nightjar is a weird-looking bird. In flight it's a slim, narrow-winged, falcon-like bird that whirrs fast across your view. It gives you little time to see it well, as it's more than likely to be out after sunset (hence the 'night' in the name). By day, nightjars (M. buqrajq) sleep in trees or in the shady, leaf-littered floor underneath. Once settled and motionless along a gnarled branch or among the dead leaves the bird virtually disappears, so perfect is its camou- flage. Seen up close, the nightjar is a marvel of evolution, with large reflective eyes and a huge mouth with bristles all around it, features that help the bird find and snap up insects while flying in poor light. In Malta we get nightjars on migration. Pop down to Buskett at dusk, sit quietly with plenty of sky above you, and you may get lucky. Despite their essential work, farmers experience several challenges and are not always supported, especially by important policies that are shaping the food and farming landscape. Through this exhibition with photographs of Darrin Zamit Lupi, we want to tell the story of ten Maltese farmers, who have been chosen for their environmentally-friendly farming practices and re- veal some of the faces behind Maltese produce. We invite you to learn about Malta's farmers and embark on an exploration of their genuine passion for agriculture, which, in the face of several struggles, serves as the fuel that keeps them going. Read more about this here -> https://foemalta.org/event/cap-ex- hibition/ and pop by at our exhibition on Friday 6th to Sunday 15th May on Republic Street, Valletta (near the Parliament) and on Thursday 26th to Sun- day 29th May on Ghar id-Dud, Sliema! On any one of these evenings, you are bound to see hundreds of people in festive mood. Traditional and fast food stands vie with each other to sell their wares to the crowds of merry-makers. Typical products are Maltese type nougat and other sweet delicacies. Homes are looking their absolute best, often benefitting from a fresh coat of paint a few weeks before, in preparation for the feast. The evenings often end with spectacular ground and aerial fireworks displays in an explosion of colour, firecrackers and loud petards.
