But questions are mounting as to whether top brass al- lowed Iosif Galea unfettered liberty to travel from Malta, despite knowledge of a Ger- man EAW for a tax investiga- tion implicated him. Hundreds cheated in racket involving tampered mileage INSIDE Find out whether your used Japanese car was tampered mt survey KARL AZZOPARDI HUNDREDS of consumers have been sold second-hand Japanese cars with tampered mileage gauges, in a racket involving at least two car deal- erships, MaltaToday has learnt. Cars bought from Japanese bid- ding markets on the cheap because of their high mileage, would then be sold in Malta with the dashboard gauge showing low mileage. An ex- ercise carried out by MaltaToday on a sample of 18 cars flagged by multi- ple industry sources, shows discrep- ancies ranging between 30,000km and 130,000km between the original mileage and the one registered in Malta. Sources have indicated that at least two car dealers were using the servic- es of a garage in San Gwann to tam- per with the odometer and then falsi- fy documentation issued by the Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Centre (JEVIC), to dupe consumers into be- lieving the second-hand car they are being sold is of low mileage.
