maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 AUGUST 2022 5 CULTURE Comedy-thriller at Gozo ministry FEEL the Magic's inaugural per- formance of the 2022-23 season is a one-act comedy-thriller, The Last Policeman, which is being premiered on Friday 26 August 2022 at 8 p.m. at the Gozo Ministry Courtyard in St Francis Square, Victoria. The comedy-thriller is inspired by the novel of the same name, penned by Angelo Camilleri. The Last Policeman provides a snapshot of what happens when different sides of law confront each other in an abandoned bar, waiting to meet their destiny. What is right and wrong dur- ing a catastrophic event? Who is a criminal if the only crime being committed is to rebel against the constructs of a dy- ing society? These dilemmas and more will be explored dur- ing the production by Beta En- tertainment Theatre Academy in association with Chorus Ur- banus Productions. The Last Policeman is direct- ed by Jamie Camilleri, a well- known theatre practitioner who graduated in Theatre Stud- ies and teaches drama at the Gozo Visual & Performing Arts School and at the Gozo College. Several well-known Gozitan ac- tors play the leading roles: Pre- sely Clark, Dylan Attard, Mat- thias Mercieca, David Grech and Lara Mompalao. Director Jamie Camilleri said The Last Policeman is an in- novative first-timer for a Gozo theatre audience, in that after the performance there will be a Q&A session with him, the playwright and the actors on the challenges involved and other details relating to the play's content. Entrance is free but booking through the Eventbrite website is recommended. Feel the Magic 2022-24 is generously sponsored by the Arts Council Malta, the Ministry for Gozo and Michael Grech Financial Investment Ser- vices. MALTA-BASED artists who graduated in 2019-2022 had fewer chances to expose their work in projects and exhibi- tions, therefore Blitz is offer- ing this opportunity to apply for an open call to have a new project produced and exhibit- ed by Blitz, and published in a catalogue. This initiative is intended to give the successful applicant a curated platform to express themselves, an occasion to work one-to-one with inter- national curator Sara Dolfi Agostini on a new commission and improve their professional skills while promoting their ar- tistic practice. Blitz will act as a host institution, a mentor and partner. The selected artist will have the opportunity to work on a first commission and solo show. Our aim is to provide a plat- form to kickstart a profession- al career through mentorship and curatorial guidance, while also creating the opportunity to expose the emerging artistic community to our internation- al network. This competitive open call is open to highly motivated in- dividuals from all artistic dis- ciplines, including (but not limited to) new media, digital platforms, film, photography, performance, painting, sound, architecture, electronic mu- sic, installation, and who have graduated from an arts-related degree in Malta between 2019 and 2022. All applicants are requested to present a proposal for a new project to be produced and ex- hibited at Blitz Valletta. The selected candidate will be mentored through a research and production phase of ap- proximately a month, during which the resident artist will be in a conversation with the curator. The production phase will be followed by the launch of a solo exhibition at Blitz Valletta. The deadline is 31 August, for more information visit https:// b l i t z v a l l e t t a . c o m / e m e r g i n g - artist-open-call/ A competitive open call for one Malta-based recent graduate to produce their first commission and solo show
