maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 AUGUST 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 828. Two-banded Bream OVER 300 species of fish occur around our shores. Many of them keep to the deeper waters but many others live quite happily in the shallows – that's the same bit of sea we humans invade in summer for a refreshing swim. One graceful fish that lives right there under- neath our flailing limbs is the two-banded bream (M. xirgien). It's one of a handful of closely-related species that look rather alike but which are actually quite easy to tell apart thanks to different black markings. The two-banded bream, for example, is the only one with two distinctive black stripes on its silvery body. It's gregarious and often seen in small groups, as they dart among the rocky habitat they love, where various algae abound for them to browse on, along with the occasional urchin or starfish.
