maltatoday | SUNDAY • 11 JUNE 2023 5 CULTURE Open day next Sunday to visit the exhibition of the tapestries THE St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation is pleased to an- nounce the second Open Day to commemorate the completion of a sixteen-year restorative project of the historic set of Tapestries on Sunday 18 June 2023 between 16:00 hrs and 21:00 hrs (last entry at 20:30 hrs). Entrance is free of charge. This Open Day will pro- vide an exclusive opportunity for the general public to view and ex- perience an integral part of Mal- ta's cultural and historical herit- age for more than three centuries. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Co-Cathedral's in- tricately embellished interior by joining one of the many guided tours of the Tapestries in Maltese and English. The set of tapestries was commissioned by the Grand Master of the Knights of St John, Frà Ramon Perellos y Roccafull, between 1697 and 1702. These magnificent tapestries display episodes from the Life of Christ and the Triumph of the Catholic Church. The set was being sent to Belgium since 2006 and restored by the Royal Manufacturers De Wit Laboratories where the pro- ject was finalised in 2022. The majority of the tapestries meas- ure 6.2 x 6.5m making this set of 750m2 the largest antique set in the world. For more information email us at info@stjohnscocathedral.com.
