maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 JUNE 2023 10 COMMERCIAL The Zero Waste Future programme completed successfully in Malta THE Zero Waste Future Pro- gram runs in Malta for the third year in a row by the Cyp- riot NGO AKTI Project and Re- search Centre with the funding of The Coca-Cola Foundation and the support of GSD Mar- keting Ltd. The project engaged coastal HoReCa businesses, citizens, local authorities and NGOs in Malta to take owner- ship of the efforts for sustain- able development, to increase recycling and decrease land and marine litter, through a nov- el, engaging solution-oriented, awareness-raising and partic- ipatory process and to address the strategic topics of recycling and sustainable waste manage- ment within a Circular Econo- my in Malta. The Zero Waste Future pro- gram has been very successful in Malta for the past years: the activities have raised awareness among more than five million citizens through social and tra- ditional media. Over 57 tonnes of Plastic, Metal & Drinks pack- aging (PMD) have been collect- ed, and more than 1000 volun- teers participated in the beach and seabed clean-up activities. The results of this year's "Ze- ro Waste Future" (July 2022 – June 2023) are impressive! The waste characterisation study, which is happening for the first time in Malta, was expanded to cover all three cities of Cotton- era, which covered 66 sampling points over three sampling ses- sions. The positive impact of BCRS on minimising the amount of residual waste was visible. 50 HoReCa members were en- rolled in the Responsible Coast- al Business Network and 17 tonnes of PET waste was col- lected and recycled in cooper- ation with Festivals Malta and the NGO Zibel. Additionally, more than 4 million citizens were reached. Sustainability is the only way forward. Malta is on the road to becoming a sustainability champion!
