maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 SEPTEMBER 2023 10 COMMERCIAL LIDL Malta invests €650,000 in digitalisation and introduces electronic price tags LIDL Malta, the leading retail chain on the Maltese islands, achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to innovation and digitalisation. The Com- pany announces the introduction of dig- ital price tags in its stores, replacing pa- per ones, with an investment of around 650,000 EUR for its ten stores. Electronic price tags seemingly look like traditional labels, but when you look closely, it turns out that they are small screens displaying the price and other information about the product. This initiative will result in sub- stantial paper savings, underlining once again the determination of Lidl Malta to reduce its environmental impact. Mark Vassallo, Finance Manager of Lidl Malta, commented on this important change: "Lidl is a highly dynamic com- pany that directs its actions towards the future. When thinking of digitalisation in retail, people thoughts immediately go to online shopping, overlooking the fact that the digital transition of the sector al- so entails projects like this one, revitalis- ing the physical shopping space, creating value, and enhancing the shopping expe- rience. This investment will enable us to be even closer to our customers, facilitat- ing a more transparent, clearer, and faster communication." Lidl has successfully implemented this new system across all its Maltese stores, demonstrating the Company's commit- ment to modernisation. The new elec- tronic price tags utilise an ESL (Elec- tronic Shelf Labels) mechanism that wirelessly connects to a centralised sys- tem. All labels are directly connected to a management system, therefore prices and product information changes are au- tomatically transferred to e-price tags, al- most in real time. With this automation, the effort involved in printing and chang- ing prices is reduced, making processes more efficient. International Beer Challenge Awards for Farsons beers THREE beers brewed by the Farsons Brewery have once again been awarded silver and bronze medals in this year's edi- tion of the International Beer Challenge (IBC) Tasting Awards. Cisk Lager and Cisk Excel Low-Carbo- hydrate Lager have been awarded Bronze and Silver respectively in the Lagers cate- gory, whilst Blue Label Ale, from the Far- sons Classic Brews range, was awarded Bronze in the Ales Category. The IBC Tasting Awards are established through a rigorous judging process – a highly controlled setting of blind tastings by panels of more than 70 respected and experienced industry experts ranging from retailers, importers, publicans, brew- ers, writers and flavour analysts. Being a part of the IBC carries with it numerous signifi- cant benefits. Not only does the com- petition acknowl- edge the skill of the brewer, but an IBC medal is an interna- tionally recognised symbol of quality. Samples of cans, bottles and mini kegs are delivered to the judging area in groups of num- bered tasting glass- es to ensure the accuracy of the blind tasting. Each judge will assess products and aim at rewarding a well-made, interesting beer that deserves to be consumed. The variety of the beer is selected by the entrant and verified by the table captains. Each beer is blind tasted and awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold for its aroma, appearance, taste and finish or in some cases, no medal is awarded if the level is not achieved. This year's competition saw entrants from more than 30 countries, not just from brewing heartlands such as the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US and the Czech Republic, but also from emerging beer na- tions such as Bolivia, Paraguay, South Ko- rea, Taiwan and Mongolia. 40 beers won gold medals, 130 won silver, while 188 won bronze. NGO Zibel in collaboration with the Zero Waste HoReCa launches Zibel Tribe! ZIBEL, in collaboration with the Zero Waste HoReCa Program, has taken a re- markable step forward in fighting marine plastic pollution. By strategically placing 10 skips along the coast of Malta, this environ- mental initiative aims to encourage coastal clean-up efforts while specifically targeting marine plastic waste that requires special treatment for recycling. Recognizing the significance of coastal clean-ups and their role in tackling marine plastic pollution, Zi- bel has cleverly introduced 10 skips along the coast of Malta solely for the disposal of marine plastics. These skips act as designat- ed collection points, where individuals and groups can deposit the marine waste they gather during coastal clean-up activities. By providing a convenient and centralized place to dispose of marine plastic waste, Zibel encourages and facilitates eco-con- scious citizens to proactively participate in beach clean-ups. Through the Zibel Tribe community, volunteers will be guided on what locations need attention, tips and tricks from the Zibel team and our partners, special projects for the Tribe and many oth- er benefits that only the Zibel Tribe com- munity will receive. Join this group can by visiting the Zibel Facebook page and join- ing the Zibel Tribe Group - https://www. facebook.com/groups/6765035110206589/ To access these bins, kindly scan the QR code on the bin, enter your contact details, the amounts you are depositing, and a pic- ture of the waste collected. Once these are submitted, a code for the padlock will ap- pear on your screen so you can unlock the bin and deposit the collected items. The location of the bins can be viewed on the website of Zibel - https://www.zibel.org/ zibel-tribe. One of the exceptional aspects of Zibel's initiative is its focus on marine plastic waste, which requires special treat- ment for recycling and cannot be recycled with regular plastic waste due to it becom- ing contaminated. By specifically aiming to collect and manage this type of waste, Zibel Tribe demonstrates its commitment to not only cleaning up our coastlines but also making sure the collected plastics are documented correctly and appropriately recycled. This targeted effort ensures that marine plastics find their way to the right channels, where they can be properly recy- cled and become new products. This initiative continues to strengthen the Zero Waste HoReCa program, an initiative which targets businesses in the hospital- ity industry to become more sustainable. Through this partnership, this movement is continuing to promote proper waste re- duction and recycling while collecting and recycling marine plastics. Businesses who would want to join this program can do so by sending an email to program@akti.org. cy As autumn and winter travel plans start taking shape, Emirates makes the perfect seasonal getaway more accessible than ev- er.
