The One Belt One Road Initia- tive, now called the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is an ambitious yet controversial undertaking to boost connectivity and trade across the world with Chinese money and know-how in infra- structure development. Replying to questions by this newspaper, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Malta recognis- es the importance of China as a global player, and that is why, like 17 other European countries, signed an MoU on the One Belt One Road Initiative. In 2018, Malta was among the first European countries to sign an agreement with China to part- ner with the country to imple- ment its President's vision of the 'One Belt One Road' project.
