8 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 13 DECEMBER 2023 NEWS NEWS THE old parish church of Ze- jtun, also known as St.Gregory's Church, was the venue on Fri- day the 17th November, for the inauguration of the beautifully restored titular painting of St. Catherine's, which adorns the main altar of the same church. The restoration is another of Wirt iz-Zejtun's many projects intended to enhance the cultur- al and historical riches of Ze- jtun. During the event, Ms. Valenti- na Lupo, restorer with the At- elier del Restauro, which had been entrusted with the resto- ration of the painting, gave a presentation detailing the work and the procedures involved in bringing the painting back to its original vibrancy. Dr. Sandro Debono also gave a fascinating talk about his ongoing research into the origins of the painting. Various pieces for the organ were played by Mro. Joseph Caruana, while Mr. Anthony Spagnol was compere for the evening. The church was lit only by candlelight, which not only en- hanced the beautiful architec- ture and intimate atmosphere, but also served to keep the painting in darkness until the moment when it was lit up for the audience to enjoy its fully restored glory. The honour of turning on the spotlights fell to the Archdeacon of the Met- ropolitan Cathedral of Mdina, Mgr. Joseph Bajada, Archpriest Fr. Nicholas Pace and Architect Ruben Abela, President of Wirt iz-Zejtun. This project by Wirt iz-Zejtun was co-funded by Foundation Galxlokk, using EU funds from the LEADER project.
