maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 APRIL 2024 4 ALMANAC My essentials ANNE IMMELÉ 49 yrs, Performing Arts Practitioner and Theatre/TV producer. Since completing my PhD about associations in photography, I have been curating exhibitions and teaching at art schools. Since 2013, I have directed the BPM - Mulhouse Photo Biennial, an international event that explores the contemporary world through the prism of photography. My photographic projects are deeply invested in exploring themes of coexistence and shared human experience, aiming to reveal and question the ways in which we live and interact in our environments. 4 5 1. Book 2. Film 3. Internet / TV 4. Music 5. Place I really enjoy podcasts. One of my favorites is The Urbanaut Pod- cast, produced by Urbanautica, an independent publisher focused on photography, visual anthro- pology, and cultural landscapes. They've recently launched a pod- cast that features in-depth inter- views with photographers. These extended conversations offer deep insights into the challeng- es and perspectives surrounding contemporary photography. An- other podcast I regularly tune in- to is The Real Photo Show. This programme delves into the world of photographers and their con- nections with the broader arts community. P.J. Harvey's albums have been my constant com- panions since Dry, her very first album. Among her vast discography, White Chalk stands out as a time- less work. His haunting, sometimes ghostly voice is both striking and deeply moving. The use of mini- malist acoustic guitar and piano arrangements un- derlines Harvey's talent for creating deeply emotional and poetic soundscapes. More generally, I listen to a lot of music that soothes me and helps me concen- trate. I simply love exploring cliff- side paths and discovering the caves of the Maltese is- lands. These caves inspired my current photographic project, 'Melita, Refuge'. Of these, Għar il-Kbir stands out for its many intercon- nected caves. It is thought to have been a complex habita- tion system, which remained inhabited until 1835. The unique geology of the Mal- tese caves makes them ideal shelters. I re-read 'Austerlitz' by W.G. Sebald. For me, he's one of the greatest contem- porary authors. The story is about how the events of the past haunt lives and res- onate in the space around the survivors, those who have escaped disaster and destruction. The main character, Jacques Auster- litz, is doomed to a melan- choly wandering, a perma- nent exile. Photographic images play an important role in the story, increasing the ambiguity between re- ality and fiction. THE Mirror (1974), an auto- biographical film based on Andreï Tarkovski's memo- ries, particularly his child- hood in the countryside with his mother after his parents separated. Memo- ries of his life are interwo- ven with those of his father and grandfather, and three dream sequences punctu- ate the film. The non-line- ar editing also incorporates archive footage. This film reminds us that the present slips through our fingers like sand, and sometimes only has material weight through memories.
