5 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 22 MAY 2024 SURVEY MATTHEW FARRUGIA mfarrugia@mediatoday.com.mt Health authorities investigating source of contamination in two popular bays Floriana councillor calls for upkeep of Jubilee Grove, raises concern about red circles on trees CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The swimming ban was issued after microbiological contamination was de- tected in both bays. Tests showed the presence of E. coli and I. enterococci bacteria, which are normally a sign of untreated sewage contamination. The health authorities said bathing is currently not recommended in the two zones since this contamination poses a significant health risk to bathers. "Environmental Health Officers are currently carrying out investigations to identify the source of the contami- nation. However, the duration of this contamination and when it will be safe to bathe again cannot be determined at this time," the authorities said. The public is advised to follow updates from the Environmental Health Direc- torate and avoid bathing in the affect- ed waters until further notice to ensure their safety and health. Environmental health officers are conducting investigations in Balluta Bay (pictured) and St George's Bay FLORIANA PN local councillor James Aaron Ellul has appealed for his locality's Jubilee Grove to be given the appreciation and cleansing it deserves. In a short video, Ellul also raised con- cerns about red circles appearing on trees at the site. There has been no clarifica- tion on the purpose of these markings, leading to fears that the trees may be sub- ject to severe pruning or removal. Ellul highlighted that the grove, located opposite the Sa Maison Ferry Terminal, has been neglected for years. He further mentioned that a few weeks ago, he had urged the Floriana Local Council to ad- dress the grove's deteriorating condition. In his video, Ellul also pointed out graf- fiti on the Floriana fortification walls, situated further up from the trees, noting that unlike other walls in Malta, the Flo- riana Lines have never been restored. In 2017, Ellul had proposed a motion for a comprehensive revamp to transform the area into a recreational family park. He concluded by once again appealing for the recognition that this grove de- serves.
