5 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 12 JULY 2024 OPINION ARE we ready to provide Gozitans with a holistic vision for Gozo, and actually implement it? Gozo may truly blossom, but only through sustainable economic growth with a focus on select, quality-in- ducing sectors. Freezing progress is not what we mean when we call for the preservation of the island's heritage and rural life. To complement such rich heritage with progress, will take shifting from one-off initiatives to a broad holistic approach conducive to quality jobs for its inhab- itants. Gozo should benefit from targeted actions that play to its strengths which at the end will contribute to the larger economic cycle of Malta. It will take a departure from Gozo's treatment as a mere extension of the larger island. Tourism is a strong pillar of Gozo's economy, with attractions ranging from scenic landscapes and stunning beaches to historical sites. Promoting sustainable tourism can drive econom- ic growth while preserving the island's natural beauty. We should heed calls in the business community for high- end tourism and a focus on quality over quantity, targeting of niche markets such as cultural tourism, natural tour- ism, and [let's not undervalue] MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism, which can ele- vate Gozo as a premier destination, not just in summer, but with a focus on the shoulder and low season. Gozo's rich cultural history, including ancient sites like the Ġgantija temples, unique folk- lore, crafts, and traditions, is integral to Maltese identity. Preserving and restor- ing Gozo's historical, traditional and ar- chitectural heritage can attract heritage and cultural tourism, fostering a deeper appreciation for the island's history. That said, gripping solely to tourism is a chronic mistake. Diversification is crucial. Despite intermittent efforts to create individual niche jobs on the is- land, there has been no significant im- pact. The needed holistic approach should integrate various initiatives to create a synergistic effect, leading to economic prosperity, social growth and a sustainable community well-being. Gozo is rural. The agricultural sec- tor in Gozo has significant potential for innovation and sustainability. With EU funding, Gozo can develop an ag- ricultural [and fisheries?] sector that embraces technology, shifts towards local produce, and reduces dependence on imports. Promoting organic farm- ing and agri-tourism, also through im- proved planning policies, can increase demand within the local market, pro- viding farmers with new opportunities. Making local produce readily available and affordable, supported by effective consumer marketing, can further en- hance this sector. Gozo can lead in Green and Blue Economy investment. Its characteris- tics provide it with serious potential to become a Mediterranean leader in clean investment. This will see the direction of renewable energy projects, utilizing wind, solar, and marine resources to the island creating quality jobs and in- spiring a positive vision for the future. A green and blue economy, where the future lies, can boost local manufac- turing, economic growth, and improve energy access and security. In addition, the ocean surrounding Gozo holds im- mense potential for economic and cul- tural enrichment. I could write exten- sively about Ocean Governance and the Blue Economy, but let's leave that for another time. Diversification remains the name of the game. There remains room in Gozo's up and coming economy, to seep and grow through sectors like dig- ital innovation, the creative industries, and remote work hubs which can at- tract talent and increased investment. Supporting local entrepreneurs through dedicated services, grants, training, and infrastructure can stimulate economic activity and job creation. I know for a fact that many young Gozitan entrepre- neurs are eager to develop their ambi- tions, yet face barriers due to limited access to targeted guidance to over- come these unique barriers. Improving transport links between Gozo and mainland Malta is vital. Reli- able ferry services and enhanced digital infrastructure can bridge the gap, fos- tering economic and social integration. Establishing higher education institu- tions and research centres in Gozo can cultivate local talent, promote research in fields like marine biology, digital technology, medicine, and archaeology, and attract international students and academics. A holistic approach beyond economic growth Beyond economic considerations, true prosperity for Gozitans must encom- pass a holistic approach. This involves not only economic growth but also im- provements in the quality of life. Pros- perity should be measured by more than just Gross Domestic Product; it should reflect the health of families, the quality of education, and the joy of life. As Rob- ert Kennedy poignantly noted in 1968, the GDP "does not take into account the health of our families, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play... it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile." This sentiment is highly relevant for Gozo, where the goal should be a comprehen- sive improvement in living standards. Protecting Gozo's pristine environ- ment is crucial, with initiatives to safe- guard its unique ecosystems, marine life, and biodiversity being essential for long-term sustainability. Investing in healthcare, social services, and recrea- tional facilities will enhance the quality of life for Gozitans, ensuring that de- velopment benefits all residents. Col- laboration between local government, NGOs, and the private sector can drive comprehensive development strategies, ensuring all stakeholders are invested in Gozo's growth. Well-being should be at the centre of all efforts. In essence, the vision is "Għawdex, in- niċċa il-ġdida" - an island where its peo- ple prosper in economy, values... and life. Through political advocacy, with your help, I will push forward EU pol- icies that address Gozo's unique needs, ensuring sustained attention and re- sources. By focusing on Gozo's strengths and addressing its unique challenges through a comprehensive and sustain- able approach, we can ensure that Gozo not only preserves its rich heritage but also evolves into a model of economic and social prosperity of its own. Above all, my personal goal is to empower the island to thrive and instil in its youth the ability to dream and achieve.
