maltatoday | SUNDAY • 14 JULY 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 927. Mud Dauber YOU can generally easily tell bees from wasps: bees are usually chubby with short hairy legs and drab looks, while wasps are the ones with the slender waists, long smooth legs and snazzy patterns! One wasp that looks positively anorexic is the mud dauber, recog- nisable by its impossibly long thin waist and extra long hind legs. It is called mud dauber (M. żunżan taz-zokk) because it builds this amphora-shaped structure out of mud, often in the sheltered cor- ner between a wall and a ceiling or overhang. Once done, the wasp catches a bunch of spiders, stings and paralyzes them, trusses them all into the mud chamber and – just before sealing the sarcophagus – lays an egg in it. When the egg hatches, the larva feeds on the fresh food, pupates and when she's ready, pokes a hole in the amphora and flies out. Cool (if rather disconcerting!) Researching the potential for community energy in Malta A renewable energy community is a group that is legally formed and operates based on voluntary participation. It is controlled by individuals or organizations who are located near renewable energy projects owned by the community. The members of this community can be individuals, small businesses, or local government bodies such as municipalities. The main goal of a renewable energy community is to benefit the environ- ment, economy, and society in the areas where it operates, rather than focusing solely on making financial profits.
