11 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 2 AUGUST 2024 CULTURE WELCOME to the enchanting island of Gozo, where every step is a journey through time and breathtaking landscapes! Today, we're lacing up our hiking boots and embarking on an adventure to the iconic Ta' Ġurdan Light- house – a beacon that not only pierces the night sky but also slices through the pages of his- tory. The ascent begins at the base of the hill close to the village of Ghasri. A winding trail snakes through wildflowers and shrubs, teasing our sens- es with the salty tang of the nearby Mediterranean. As you climb, the panorama unfolds like a canvas painted by nature, revealing the undulating hills and terraced fields that define Gozo's charm. But this destination isn't just any hilltop; it's the majestic Ta' Ġurdan Lighthouse, a Gozitan landmark that has stood proud since 1851, a relic of British rule. Rising 161 meters above sea level, this architectural marvel was born out of necessi- ty to guide the ever-increasing maritime traffic in the region. Operational since 15 October, 1853, the lighthouse was once adorned with 21 purpose-built oil lamps, their brass reflectors silver-plated to cast a beam visible up to 38 miles away. Fast forward to today, and the lighthouse stands as a silent sentinel, its beam less dramat- ic due to improved maritime navigation technology and the ever-spreading glow of street- lights. But fear not; the magic of the ascent is undiminished. The trek uphill is a steep thir- ty-minute workout, but trust us, the views are worth every step. The azure sea unfolds be- neath you, and the little village of Għasri looks like a miniature world below. And guess what? If luck is on your side, you might run into the lighthouse attendant, who could offer a peek inside this historic gem. Imagine climbing the spiral staircase to the very top! The adventure doesn't end at the lighthouse; the flat hilltop welcomes you with the ruins of a colonial military observation post. It's like stumbling upon a secret chapter of Gozo's histo- ry. Even if the lighthouse atten- dant isn't around, you can still explore the area, soaking in an incredible 360-degree panora- ma. On clear days you might even catch a glimpse of Sicily! So, lace up those boots, grab your sense of wonder, and get ready to journey to Ta' Ġurdan Lighthouse. Gozo's history and beauty await one step at a time.
