maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 AUGUST 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 932. Common Kingfisher FEW people are aware we get kingfishers in Malta (M. għasfur ta' San Martin). Kingfishers are migratory birds, and since we're on their flyway we get a few turning up for a rest and a bite before flying on north or south. As their name clearly shows, these are fishing birds so they go for wetlands like Għadira, Is-Simar and Salina na- ture reserves. Having nested early in mainland Europe, these mag- nificent creatures start flying south even in high summer, and begin to appear at the nature reserves and around our shores. If they find good conditions – i.e. no disturbance and plenty of small fish to dive for – some even stay the winter, as happens every year at BirdLife nature reserves. Maybe, who knows, some day a pair or two will nest too! Design Thinking Marathon Are you a young person or someone who works with youths who wants to see a better Malta? Five people have been charged in the drug-related death of Matthew Perry last year, police say, including two doctors and the actor's personal assistant. Police said on Thursday that their investigation, launched in May, uncovered a "broad underground criminal network" of drug suppliers who distributed large quantities of ketamine. Performing a mix of the two songs they've made together, Everything Has Changed and End Game, Swift thanked Sheeran for appearing alongside her to perform to a sell-out crowd of 92,000 fans. Perry, 54, died at his Los Angeles home in October. A post-mortem examination found a high concentration of ketamine in his blood and determined the "acute effects" of the controlled substance had killed him.
