PN leads Labour by 12,000 votes despite Grech's poor showing THE Nationalist Party has an ad- vantage of 12,000 votes over the Labour Party in MaltaToday's first survey since June's European elec- tion. The PN enjoys the support of 48.2% of the electorate, a 4.4-point lead over the PL on a projected turnout of 75.7%. The PN's success comes despite the unpopularity of its leader Ber- nard Grech, who trails Robert Abela by 16 points on the Trust Barometer. MaltaToday's new trust question asks which leader respondents trust most to run the country. Nonetheless, the result suggests the PN's relative im- provement in the MEP election has maintained an upward trajec- tory throughout the summer. Although the PL won the Euro- pean election, it saw a 40,000-vote gap achieved in 2019 slashed to a mere 8,000 votes in what was con- sidered a major setback. The survey cane after a tumultu- ous three months for the PL that exposed internal divisions. It also coincided with the PL's general conference, during which two new deputy leaders and other officials were elected, in most cas- es by a resounding majority. The PN's gains are primarily at- tributable to a higher abstention rate among PL voters, coupled with smaller inroads among La- bour voters. The survey further reveals that a third of current PN voters would still vote for the party despite not trusting its leader.
