maltatoday | SUNDAY • 29 SEPTEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 938. Lesser Kestrel THE lesser kestrel is one of the falcon species that yearly migrates over Malta. As autumn migration progresses, BirdLife's birdwatch- ers log this bird along with many other species travelling from Eu- rope to spend winter in Africa. The lesser kestrel (M. spanjulett se- kond) is less common than its larger and very similar cousin – the common kestrel – but it comes with the bonus that it is often seen in loose flocks. That's because – unlike most birds of prey – lesser kestrels nest in colonies, i.e. groups. There are breeding colonies all around us: Sicily, Tunisia and Libya. But naturally, not here, not with our big posse of trigger-happy 'socio-cultural' hunters. Until the kill- ing of birds diminishes substantially, a colony of lesser kestrels will remain a spectacle Maltese nature lovers must travel to enjoy. Community Gardening Session As we settle into autumn weather, the Community Garden at Friends of the Earth Malta is back in action meeting for its first monthly session on 28th September 2024, from 4:00pm till 7:00pm This event will equip you with knowledge related to sustainable garden- ing! A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Critics praise Sally Rooney's 'utterly perfect' Intermezzo. The Irish author's fourth book swaps out her usual female protagonist and instead follows the relationship between two grieving brothers who are both in age- gap relationships and think they have little in common. The news that Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are starring in Emerald Fennell's take on Emily Brontë's romance has caused a storm. The online response hasn't been wholly positive. Brontë fans on social media called the casting "disappointing", "terrible" and "bizarre", Ivan is a 22-year-old competitive chess player and a "complete oddball" according to his older brother, Peter, a smooth- talking barrister. The Independent's film critic Clarisse Loughrey asked: "Did anyone actually read the book before deciding this?"
