The event was organised in col- laboration with the 'Koperattiva Maltija tal-Mogħoż u n-Nagħaġ' (KMMN), the Zejtun Local Council, and the Ministry for Ag- riculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, and celebrated the rich heritage and unique characteris- tics of Malta's native livestock. It showcased an impressive variety of Maltese indigenous goats and sheep, highlighting their distinct traits that have evolved over generations. The event attracted numerous par- ticipants, providing attendees the opportunity to delve into the significance of preserving these traditional populations, which are essential to Malta's agricultural history and ecolog- ical diversity. The day's activities included the sharing of information aimed at raising awareness about the importance of these indigenous animals and their unique traits. Competitions were held across multiple categories, culminating in awards for outstanding ani- mals. "We are delighted to host this first-ever event dedicated solely to Maltese indigenous goats and sheep" Lucas Micallef, Adminis- trator of Breeds of Origin Con- servancy, said. The feedback from participants and spectators was overwhelm- ingly positive, reflecting strong community interest in conserva- tion initiatives. Breeds of Origin Conservancy remains committed to enhanc- ing awareness and promoting the significance of indigenous livestock in the agricultural com- munity. We are eager to plan fu- ture events that will engage the community and further celebrate Malta's indigenous livestock. Unfortunately, the day was later marked with the loss of renowned farmer Joseph Muscat known by many as 'il-Beżuża'. Darryl Grech, Founder of Breeds of Origin Conservancy said that amongst many things, Muscat will always be remem- bered fondly as one of the few remaining custodians of the in- digenous Maltese goat.
