maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 OCTOBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 940. European Robin THANKS no doubt to Christmas, the robin is easily the most rec- ognised bird. It begins turning up at this time of year, flying in from as far as Siberia to escape the coming winter freeze. But despite its fame and frequency, it's surprising how many people have never actually seen a robin (M. pitirross) in the wild. Luckily it's easy to attract, especially if you have a bit of garden. Now that autumn is set- ting in, insects begin to get scarce, so lure them with food by setting up a bird table: nothing elaborate, a plastic flowerpot saucer nailed to a broomstick stuck in the soil will do. Pile it with cake crumbs, biscuit, etc. (no bread!) and you're done. Allow the birds some days to get used to your bird table, and soon you'll have your resident robin (and other birds) visiting your spread throughout winter. Community Gardening Session A special edition of the Community Garden is being organised for Ġen- na ta' Ġonna at Friends of the Earth Malta. This time we will focus on an educational greening project which happened in schools across Malta and other European countries. Following a short talk, we will get into gardening. We have lots to get done in our veggie patch and wild garden. Join us to gain hands-on expe- rience in crop growing, preparing the soil, pruning, composting/ vermi- culture, creating a seed bank, beekeeping, water conservation, planting crops/ tree saplings, and learning more about the world of gardening. There will be food served during the event.
