12 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 1 NOVEMBER 2024 FOOD Ramla Bay is widely considered Gozo's, and arguably Malta's, finest beach. Known locally as "Ramla il-ħamra" – the Red Sandy Beach – this expansive stretch of red sand offers a stunning and unique coastal experience. Classified as a Natura 2000 protected site, Ramla Bay not only boasts the island's best beach but also features an ecologically important rare sand-dune habitat, which adds to its natural allure. The beach is an ideal spot for swimming, snorkelling, and soaking up the sun, making it a perfect destination for relaxation and enjoyment. Despite its popularity, Ramla Bay remains wonderfully undeveloped, preserving its natural charm. There are a few cafes and a small stall set back from the beach, providing refreshments without compromising the area's serene atmosphere. The protected sand dunes and the lush, fertile valley leading down to the bay enhance the scenic beauty of the location. The terraced walls built by local farmers create a patchwork quilt effect when viewed from the surrounding high ground, adding to the picturesque landscape. Rich in myth and history, Ramla Bay is not just a natural wonder but also a site of archaeological significance. Beneath its sands lie Roman remains, and features of interest from the times of the Knights, hinting at the area's historical importance. Did you know? 1.
