maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 NOVEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 944. Golden Samphire MOST of our plants flower in spring, but some prefer other seasons. The golden samphire (M. xorbett) shrub is in the autumn team and is currently an explosion of yellow, much to bees' and butterflies' de- light. It is a coastal species, braving sea spray, constant exposure and other punishment that would overwhelm a lesser plant. The trick that keeps this rugged perennial alive is its succulent leaves, which in botany doesn't mean juicy to eat but rather means the leaves are thick and fleshy and can store water. This store is vital in a habitat where conditions get very dry and where the nearest water source is salty. But a few good showers of rain soon recharge the golden samphire's reserves to see it through another year of wild buffeting.
