maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 JANUARY 2025 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 955. Sandwich Turn NOT a recipe for elevenses! The Sandwich tern is a bird and a rath- er elegant one too. Terns are the ballerina versions of their bulkier cousins the gulls. Like gulls they have long pointed wings, they're mostly white and grey, and they're largely associated with the sea. None of the nine species so far recorded in Malta are exactly com- mon. The least scarce is the Sandwich tern (M. ċirlewwa tax-xit- wa). These birds spend summer mostly around northern European shores, nesting in colonies on lonely beaches and islands. But in au- tumn they fly south to spend winter in milder Mediterranean or Af- rican latitudes, which is why at this time one may spot a few fishing offshore. But your best bet is a visit to Salina nature reserve, where terns often mingle with the huddled gulls. Terns are especially pre- cious for BirdLife: they're the bird in our logo!
