Eurasian spoonbill BEAKS are a bird's best friend. Having swapped hands and fingers for wings, birds switched to beaks as their main picking tool, not least food. So it's no surprise that beaks come in all shapes and siz- es. Among the weirdest that come our way is that of the Eurasian spoonbill (M. paletta). It's long with a flattened, rounded end like a spatula - hence the bird's name. Two splendid specimens of this large white bird graced the shallow pans at Salina nature reserve this week, expertly snapping up small fish and crustaceans and amply demonstrating what a great tool that beak is. Spoonbills are scarce migrants in Malta, so it's always a treat to see one glide down for a nibble in one of BirdLife's protected sites. Outside these relatively sheltered zones, these supposedly protected birds often get shot.
