maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 APRIL 2025 THIS IS A PAID COLLABORATION Consultation process begins on Miscarriage Leave Government announces it will be funding Miscarriage Leave On Wednesday morning, the Gov- ernment launched a consultation process led by the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Dr Andy Ellul. The process brought together individuals from various sectors of society to discuss the introduction of Miscarriage Leave. Representatives from the medical community, psychologists, psychia- trists, trade unions, employer asso- ciations, and even individuals who have experienced miscarriage and spoken openly about it were invited to share their views and experienc- es. The aim is for the Government to responsibly shape the policy around Miscarriage Leave. A significant point that emerged from these discussions is that, although official statistics show that around 300 miscarriages occur an- nually in Malta, the actual number may be as high as 1,000 per year due to various circumstances that lead to cases not being formally recorded. It was for this reason that, on International Women's Day, the Prime Minister announced that discussions on Miscarriage Leave had commenced, with the goal of strengthening workers' rights. These discussions are being coordinated by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Dialogue. "Malta must continue to be at the forefront of protecting workers' dignity. This is a national initiative we are undertaking together for the benefit of all Maltese and Gozitan couples," stated Dr Ellul. He stressed that the state must show serious- ness in supporting these couples during times of need, especially when the physical and emotional toll is high. He also mentioned that the discussion must include several factors — such as whether the fa- ther or the second parent in same- sex couples will also be entitled to this leave. Another important point is whether a woman has the right to keep her pregnancy private and decide when to inform her employer. The same applies to the employer's rights and how they can ensure a healthy work environment when unaware that an employee is expecting. Dr Ellul explained how easily and quickly social partners can be brought to the table to make bold decisions that significantly improve the quality of life for the people. He announced that, in the case of this measure, the Government will be covering all financial costs associat- ed with its implementation. Dr Ellul concluded by saying, "Our ultimate goal is that no one feels alone during this difficult moment. Creating a policy that helps, sup- ports, and provides the appropriate time for grief to those affected is our duty. Only in this way can work- ers and their families remain at the center of our social policy," empha- sized the Parliamentary Secretary. This discussion was just one of a series of consultations that will be taking place regarding the intro- duction of Miscarriage Leave. On International Women's Day, the Prime Minister announced that discussions on Miscarriage Leave had commenced, with the goal of strengthening workers' rights.
