Neptune Grass WE call it 'alka' but it's not an alga at all. Neptune grass (or posi- donia) is a flowering plant and more closely related to a rose than to all the algae of the sea. True, its flowers are not showy and are rarely seen, but it flowers and seeds like a regular plant, only it does all this at sea. Endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, neptune grass forms large swathes – known as 'meadows' – that are vital breeding habitat for many fish, crustaceans (crabs, etc.) and mollusks (snails, etc.). We too have sizable posidonia patches around our shores but pollution, dredging, destructive fishing methods and careless an- choring are destroying these underwater grasslands. Neptune grass is protected under EU law so we are obliged to protect the species. It is indeed thanks to its presence that many areas around Malta are marine Natura 2000 sites. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 6 JULY 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon
