Little Grebe T first glance you might mistake this bird for a duckling, but a clos- er look shows up a delicate, tapering beak that looks nothing like a duck's. That beak is ideal for catching the small fish that make up these birds' main diet, with aquatic invertebrates completing the menu. Grebes are expert divers and more at home in water than on land. About the size of a small pigeon, the little grebe (M. blonġun żgħir) is the smallest of the three grebe species that occur in Malta. It is also the only grebe that has nested in our country a few times. But the ones we see are mostly the few individuals resting on their way to Africa, or maybe stopping for the winter if left undisturbed. So, naturally, the best spots to see this bird are BirdLife's protected wetlands at Għadira, Is-Simar and Salina nature reserves. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 SEPTEMBER 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo)
