4 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 3 OCTOBER 2025 NEWS THE Gozo Central Public Library will host a talk by adventure and crime fiction author AJ Aberford, creator of the Inspector George Zammit series. The free event will take place on Wednesday, 12 No- vember, from 10:30am to 11:30am at the library in St. Francis Square, Victoria, and will be conducted in English. Tony Gartland, writing under the name AJ Aberford, has had a varied career, working as a corpo- rate and banking lawyer, running a private investment company, and founding a leading Yorkshire craft brewery. He later shifted focus to writing, producing six books in the Inspector George Zammit crime and thriller series, with the latest, "The Car Horn Revolution", pub- lished in late 2024. A seventh book is planned for 2026. Although he maintains a home in Yorkshire, Aberford lives pri- marily in Malta, which provides the setting for his series. He has described being inspired by Mal- ta's culture, history, and position as a bridge between Europe and North Africa. The islands' social, political, and geographic land- scape, as well as issues such as the migrant crisis and the growth of commercial and offshore-finan- cial sectors, form a rich backdrop for his novels, where the lines be- tween right and wrong are often blurred. Inspector George Zammit is portrayed as an unwilling hero, a Maltese policeman tackling crime, corruption, and terrorism across the southern Mediterranean. Aberford's writing career began against this complex backdrop, which continues to shape his nar- ratives. Outside of writing, Aberford is married with two grown-up sons and grandchildren. He is also a keen cook, traveller, cyclist, and swimmer. The series is published by Hobeck Books.
