Għadira Nature Reserve AS summer (very) slowly morphs into autumn, nature begins to re- act to the changes: at first almost imperceptibly, but then one morn- ing you look out and everywhere appears much greener. You start hearing birds associated with this time of year, like white wagtails and those all time favourites: robins. And where better to absorb all this if not at a nature reserve? Għadira was the first nature reserve set up in Malta, and despite impressions, birds are far from the only attractions at this rare saltmarsh wetland. Right now, for example, the place is a riot of golden samphire flowers, an autumn blooming coastal shrub, which attracts bugs and butterflies, which in turn draw in birds to feast on them. A relaxing walk along the reserve's nature trail is much recommended. And while you're there you can enjoy the brand new birdwatching hide too. Weekend opening hours Sat–Sun 10am–4pm. Entrance free. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 OCTOBER 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon
