3 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 NOVEMBER 2025 THEATRE Moveo's Nutcracker at Teatru Manoel: Where classical meets contemporary dance TEATRU Manoel presents the return of Moveo Dance Com- pany's original version of the iconic Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker. Choreographed and directed by Dorian Mallia, this year's production of The Nutcrack- er reflects the artistic vision of Moveo Dance Company, co- led by Dorian Mallia and Diane Portelli. It will be performed by an ensemble of both young dancers from the Moveo Junior Company and seasoned Moveo apprentices and dancers, with Lara Mizzi in the role of Clara and Zashaya Zammit as the tit- ular Nutcracker. The production has evolved significantly since last year's performance with a brand-new set design by Aleksandra Id- owiak that will immerse audi- ences into a dream-like world inside a whimsical toyshop. There will be new choreogra- phies too, most notably the ad- dition of the Sugar Plum Fairy's iconic Pas de Deux, which will bring an element of classical ballet to Moveo's contempo- rary style. The Nutcracker's iconic score composed by Pyotr Il- ych Tchaikovsky, paired with Dorian Mallia's contempo- rary choreography, results in a production that is perfect for audiences of all ages. The recognisable story makes this production accessible to those who are new to the world of dance, whilst the elevated cho- reography means that it will be a unique and enjoyable expe- rience for those more familiar with the genre. There will be six performanc- es of The Nutcracker from 8 to 12 December. There will be daily shows at 7:30pm and an additional matinee perfor- mance at 4:30pm on Monday. The performance has a runt- ime of roughly 75 minutes without an interval.
