JULIANA ZAMMIT jzammit@mediatoday.com.mt KARL AZZOPARDI kazzopardi@mediatoday.com.mt 3 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 NOVEMBER 2025 NEWS THE European Democratic Party has elected Momentum's General-secretary Mark Camill- eri Gambin in the role of deputy general-secretary at the party's congress in Bilbao, Spain. "We are at a crossroads where we must decide if technology will dictate our democracy or if de- mocracy will shape our technol- ogy," Camilleri Gambin said fol- lowing his election on Saturday. He said that he will ensure that Europe chooses to reject the 'ef- ficiency trap' and ensure that "innovation serves the worker, protects our children from being monetised by social media, and defends our fundamental rights." Momentum said the appoint- ment signals a renewed com- mitment within the EDP to pri- oritise issues that are central to Momentum's agenda in Malta. They said that this allows for a direct line of communication within a major European politi- cal family, which helps create a bridge between Maltese activ- ism and the wider European di- alogue. "This platform allows Momen- tum to amplify local perspec- tives on the continental stage, ensuring that issues like child safety online and environmental protection are effectively repre- sented in the broader European conversation," Momentum said. Sandro Gozi, secretary gener- al of the European Democratic Party, welcomed the appoint- ment. "We are delighted to wel- come Mark Camilleri Gambin to his new role as deputy secretary general. Both he and Arnold Cassola bring a long-standing pro-European commitment and a reform-minded approach that continues to strengthen our presence in Malta. He pointed out that together the two parties will work for a more effective and fairer Europe, firmly committed to transparen- cy, the fight against corruption, and the defence of the rule of law, key principles to protect our citizens and resist populist pres- sures. Momentum's Mark Camilleri Gambin elected European Democratic Party deputy secretary general Alex Borg yet to present statute changes for promised new deputy leader role Momentum's Mark Camilleri Gambin elected European Democratic Party deputy secretary general of the EDP MORE than two months af- ter becoming Nationalist Party leader, Alex Borg has yet to put forward statute changes to cre- ate the post of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs. During his leadership cam- paign, Borg pledged to re-intro- duce the role that was abolished in 2020 after having been intro- duced by Simon Busuttil in 2013. In replies to questions sent by MaltaToday, the PN leader stressed any such role requires an amendment to the PN stat- ute, which must go through the party's established internal pro- cess. "The creation of this new role requires a change to the statute of the PN. Any amendment to the statute must follow an estab- lished process," Borg said. The party already has a depu- ty leader for party affairs, a post which currently held by Alex Perici Calascione. Under Borg's proposal the PN would once again have two deputy leaders. Borg insisted the proposed change would form part of a broader restructuring effort. "As I explained throughout my campaign for the position of leader, the new role of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs must form part of a broader re- newal plan," he said. Borg pointed to what he de- scribed as campaign commit- ments that have already been de- livered, including the creation of a leadership team, which he said is "already bearing fruit." Shortly after his election, Borg announced lawyer and philan- thropist Sabine Agius Cabourdin would be the party's first CEO, Simon Vella Gregory would take on the role of election campaign manager, Munxar mayor Dam- ien Spiteri was appointed as his chief of staff, and Simon Mizzi as chairman of his leadership deliv- ery office. "We will shortly start focusing on longer-term decisions aimed at further strengthening the PN for the future, so that it can truly be an alternative govern- ment and deliver the change the Maltese and Gozitan people are waiting for," Borg added. Despite the assurances, he did not provide a timeline for when the proposed statute amend- ments will be presented. In September, MaltaToday re- ported sources within the PN saying that Borg is encourag- ing PN home affairs spokesper- son Darren Carabott to contest the new deputy leadership post when it is created. The post of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, would re- quire an MP to fulfil the role. Leadership contender Adrian Delia had ruled out contesting another internal election after losing the leadership bid to Borg last summer. PN leader Alex Borg (pictured during his campaign) had pledged the creation of a new deputy leader for party affairs role, but more than two months into his tenure, changes to the party statue are yet to be introduced
