9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 10 DECEMBER 2025 CULTURE Memorial Immortal – A new solo exhibition by Sergio Muscat at Valletta Contemporary MEMORIAL Immortal, a solo exhibition by Maltese artist Sergio Muscat, curat- ed by Sue Falzon, will open at Valletta Contemporary on Thursday 12 Decem- ber 2025, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibition will be on view from 12–24 December 2025 and will reopen from 7 January to 28 February 2026, Wednesday to Saturday, 2:00pm–7:00pm (closed on public holidays). Valletta Contemporary will be shut between 25 December and 6 January. Entrance is free. Developed over the past several years, Memorial Immortal is part of Muscat's long-term artistic research project into legacy, memory and change, bringing his background in technology into di- rect conversation with his visual prac- tice. Working across photography, dig- ital media and moving image, Muscat examines how images become anchors of personal and collective memory at a time when our lives are continuously recorded, archived and algorithmically sorted. "I have always sought to push the boundaries of photography and dig- ital art," Muscat notes. "For the past three years or so I have been working on a long-term project that explores the concepts of legacy, memory and change, and brings my background in technolo- gy closer to my art. This exhibition is a snapshot of my here and now – where my life and my art have brought me to- day." Curated by Sue Falzon, the exhibition brings together a selection of works that consider what we leave behind – not only in physical form, but as data, trac- es and images. Rather than offering an idealised view of immortality, Memorial Immortal raises questions: what exact- ly survives of us? Who controls these records? And how does the constant production of images alter our sense of what is worth remembering at all? Hosted at Valletta Contemporary, lo- cated at 15, 16, 17 East Street, Vallet- ta, the exhibition situates this enquiry within Malta's evolving cultural land- scape. The gallery's industrial archi- tecture and position within the historic city provide a sharp contrast to the dig- ital and conceptual nature of Muscat's work, underscoring the tension be- tween the enduring and the ephemeral. The project has developed through an extended period of introspection and experimentation, supported by an ar- tistic community that includes mentors and colleagues who have accompanied Muscat's journey of life and artistic dis- covery. The exhibition is supported by FBIC Farsons, Ta' Dirjanu, Intervisions, PhotoINK, and Snap & Print, whose contribution has helped bring this com- plex body of work into public view. Memorial Immortal invites visitors to engage critically with their own rela- tionship to images, memory and time. Rather than offering simple nostalgia or technological optimism, the exhibition encourages a more sober reflection on how we construct, preserve and edit our stories – and what may ultimately out- last us. For further information about opening times and related material, visitors are encouraged to follow Valletta Contem- porary and Sergio Muscat on their re- spective communication channels.
