7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 9 JANUARY 2026 NEWS Strong northwesterly winds to hit the islands over the weekend, Met Office warns THE Meteorological Office has warned that Malta is set to ex- perience strong northwesterly winds this weekend, with gusts possibly reaching gale force, es- pecially along coastal areas. Westerly to northwesterly winds, which began strength- ening on Wednesday, are ex- pected to continue building through Friday, reaching Force 5 to 6. Saturday will see winds increase to Force 6 from the west-northwest, while Sunday is forecast to be the most un- settled day, with showers and gusts reaching Force 6 to 7 as a low-pressure system moves across the region. Daytime temperatures will range from 14°C to 16°C, with overnight lows between 10°C and 12°C. The Met Office cau- tioned that strong winds may make it feel colder than actual temperatures. The Meteorological Office advised the public to moni- tor updates on its website and follow marine forecasts for safe navigation along Malta's coasts.
