9 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 13 FEBRUARY 2026 CULTURE AT the Għajnsielem Prima- ry School, enhancement work was carried out at the entrance and the school facade, creating a more beautiful environment. The project was inaugurated by the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Miriam Dalli togeth- er with the Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, Mayor Kevin Cauchi, members of the Għajn- sielem Local Council, as well as students, school representatives, and officials from Ambjent Mal- ta. During the inauguration, stu- dents participated in various activities, including a reading session about the lives of Mary Meilak and Ġorġ Pisani, two Gozitan poets. Poetry readings were also held on benches de- signed in form of books. Through this project, which was carried out in collaboration between the Ministry for Gozo, Environment Malta, and the Għajnsielem Local Council, the wall and concrete area that pre- viously existed were removed and replaced with a public space that provides easier access for the community while also enhancing environmental value. Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said, "This year, we con- tinued opening open spaces one after another in various localities, and today we are doing the same in Gozo, right next to the prima- ry school. With this investment, we are showing that public spaces can be transformed in a tangible way to serve people better while also benefiting the environment. This project is part of a broader effort to reduce concrete and in- crease more green spaces that are accessible, functional, and adapt- ed to the everyday life of our communities. Our goal is to bring nature closer to people, in urban areas and around schools, with spaces that make a real difference in the quality of the environment and the way people use it." Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri stated, "This project demon- strates the Government's com- mitment to investing in quality public spaces in Gozo. The cre- ation of green and accessible spaces, such as this public area near schools, adds value to the community and contributes to a more sustainable and better envi- ronment for our children and the local residents." The Director General of Amb- jent Malta, Herman Galea, ex- plained that through this project, the wall that separated the school building from the pavement was removed, and trees and shrubs were planted in its place. The Mayor of Għajnsielem, Kevin Cauchi, stated, "We have inaugurated a space where there were a wall and a concrete yard, and today we have this beautiful garden open to the public and to parents waiting for their children. There are two benches dedicated to Mary Meilak and Ġorġ Pisani. Thanks to the support of the gov- ernment and the work of the lo- cal council, we are inaugurating this project for the enjoyment of our residents." The design also includes land- scaping that reduces urban im- pact, with benches and grass pavers, green screens, and ver- tical walls with vegetation that provide more privacy and a more natural appearance. The canopy roof further strengthens the eco- logical benefits of the project. Enhancement at Ghajnsielem Primary School The bench dedicated to Mary Meilak
