AN insulin pump service using artificial pancreas technolo- gy has been launched in Gozo, aimed at improving treatment and quality of life for children and young people living with Type 1 diabetes. The new service includes the Tandem t:slim X2, which works in synergy with Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems already provided by the Government through a €10 mil- lion investment. The integrated technology delivers automated and continuous insulin therapy, helping to stabilise blood glu- cose levels and reduce the risk of long-term complications. The initiative forms part of a nearly €2 million investment over two years in specialised equipment and staff training. A dedicated clinic has been estab- lished at Gozo General Hospital to support patients using the pumps, alongside a 24/7 con- tact centre offering advice and technical assistance. Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the launch marks an- other step forward in strength- ening diabetes care for Gozitan patients. Nine patients under the age of 18 are already benefiting from the system. The service has al- so been extended to individuals who develop diabetes following total pancreatic removal sur- gery. The Government's long-term objective is to widen the scheme to cover all patients living with Type 1 diabetes, with officials describing the investment as both a clinical advancement and a source of reassurance for families managing the condi- tion.
