9 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 27 FEBRUARY 2026 CULTURE WITH just two months to go, il-Ġirja t'Għawdex returns for its 51st edition, taking place on Sunday 26 April 2026. The event remains the largest and long- est-standing athletic event in Gozo, welcoming both local and international athletes each year. Il-Ġirja t'Għawdex continues to be a cornerstone of Gozo's sporting calendar, attracting par- ticipants from around the globe and offering a unique running experience set against the island's distinctive historical and natural backdrop. Registrations for the 2026 edi- tion are currently open. Athletes can choose from a range of races designed to suit all levels and in- terests, including a Half Mara- thon, 10km and 5km races, 10km and 5km walkathons, a 2km fam- ily fun run, as well as 2km and 900m races for children. Both the Half Marathon and 10km routes are AIMS-certified, and the event holds a Gold La- bel status awarded by Athletics Malta. The Half Marathon and 10km routes have been careful- ly designed to showcase some of Gozo's most iconic locations. Along the course, athletes pass landmarks such as the Cittadella, Tas-Salvatur Hill, Xagħra Square, Xwejni, the Qbajjar Salt Pans, Ta' Pinu Shrine, and several other scenic and historic sites across the island. Run Gozo traces its origins back to 1977, when a group of young people from the Xagħra Youth Centre organised the first edi- tion. Five decades later, the event is still organised by a dedicated team of volunteers, united by a shared commitment to deliver- ing a memorable and high-qual- ity race experience. The event continues to promote an active lifestyle while celebrating the rich culture and identity of Gozo. Applications for the 2026 Run Gozo are open via www.rungozo. org. Athletes who register by 15 March 2026 will receive a per- sonalised race bib.
