Eurasian blue tit MOST birds we see in Malta are migratory, feathered visitors drop- ping in during their annual migrations across continents. But there are also many species that stay put in their natal land all their life, and those of course we never get to see. Among these "remainers" is a group of small acrobatic birds known as tits: great tits, blue tits, marsh tits, coal tits, etc. Some of these are common and widespread across Europe, livening gardens and woodland glades with their en- ergetic antics, but these guys stay there all their life or only venture a few kilometres – certainly not the 100km of sea that separate us from mainland Europe. No wonder the two blue tits (M. primavera) that turned up at San Anton Gardens some days ago had birdwatch- ers flocking for a glimpse of these small beauties flitting among the araucaria needles. Considering the rarity of this bird, their excite- ment was quite understandable. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 MARCH 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Mark-Raymond Galea (photo) https://foemalta.org/event/kamp-kemmuna-edizzjoni-rebbiegha/
