A Malta-flagged container ship VALOR is docked at Abu Qir Port in Egypt and intends to load over eight containers of military grade steel for delivery to Israel, according to activists. In a statement on Tuesday, Ġustizzja tal-Palestina warned that the steel is being prepared for delivery to Israel for Elbit Systems Land in Ramat Hasha- ron to produce lethal weapons. "This would mean that Mal- ta, a signatory to the Genocide Convention, is actually con- travening this pivotal human rights law by failing to take steps to prevent further indis- criminate atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank." The activists said that eight containers can carry over 200 tonnes of steel bars and rods, enough to produce 4,250 ar- tillery shells. "Israel has fired such shells to kill, permanent- ly maim, wound and terrorise thousands of children in Gaza over the past thirty months." They said that they received contradicting messages as to which Maltese authority is re- sponsible to take action in such cases. "Each authority points to another! This raises very grave doubts about the seriousness of Malta's due diligence regarding human rights violations." They said that the State's si- lence on the matter "clearly aids Israel's genocide in Gaza, its apartheid system, and its illegal occupations of Palestini- an stolen land". "We call for the illegal trans- fer of military and dual use ma- terial to be prevented through an effective and consistent sanctioning system now and in the future." The statement was also en- dorsed by the Palestine Soli- darity Campaign, Grupp New- tralita u Paċi, and Front Maltin Inqumu. 6 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 8 APRIL 2026 NEWS NICOLE MEILAK nmeilak@mediatoday.com.mt Call for Tenders The Secretariat for Catholic Educa on (SfCE) in Malta announces the launch of the following tender: • SfCE 004/2026: Supplies Ͳ Framework Contract for the Supply and maintenance of energy Efficient Laptop devices for educators in Church schools in Malta and Gozo • Deadline: 4th May 2026 • Tender documents may be obtained from the web- site: h ps://church.mt/tenders • Interested bidders must submit their sealed tenders by the indicated deadline, addressed to: Secretariat for Catholic Educa on 36, Idmejda Street, Balzan BZN1520 Activists warn of Malta-flagged ship transferring military material to Israel The VALOR is believed to be preparing to transfer military grade steel destined for Israel (Photo: Maxi Alonso/Marine Traffic) Man arraigned on domestic violence charges after evading police for seven months AN Indian national residing in St Paul's Bay has been ar- raigned in court facing domes- tic violence charges after seven months of evading police, who were unable to trace him. The 44-year-old who works as a refrigeration technician, was arrested upon his arrival in Malta earlier this week and subsequently charged with causing his wife to fear that vi- olence would be used against her. The case dates back to Sep- tember 2025, when the ac- cused's wife filed a report with the Domestic Violence Unit. The couple share a son. According to the prosecution, one of the incidents occurred on 31 August 2025, when the woman woke up feeling unwell with stomach pains and decid- ed to remain in bed. The ac- cused allegedly became angry, shouting at her for not prepar- ing breakfast for him and their son. Distressed, the woman re- portedly went outside and was seen crying on her doorstep, where she was approached by two women. The court also heard that on another occasion, the accused bought bread but told his wife he had bought it with his own money and she was not allowed to have any. When she asked him for money to buy food, he allegedly refused. A danger assessment carried out by the victim indicated a score of 22, placing her at "ex- treme danger" level. Police Inspector Colin Shel- don told the court that the man had been listed as want- ed for the past seven months, with several arrest warrants is- sued after efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful. Three days ago, authorities received information that he would be travelling to Malta on a Ryanair flight from Marseille. Police officers arrested him up- on arrival at Malta Internation- al Airport at around 8:55pm. He was subsequently registered at the lock-up and held for fur- ther investigation. He plead not guilty. A request for bail was made by the defence. The prosecu- tion did not object after noting that the accused is regularly employed and that no further reports against him had been filed. Bail was granted against a €1,000 and a personal guaran- tee of €4,000. A curfew was also imposed. A protection order in favour of the alleged victim was also issued. Inspector Colin Sheldon pros- ecuted. Lawyer Alex Scerri Her- rera appeared for the accused. Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi presided over the arraignment. MAYA GALEA mgalea@mediatoday.com.mt
