Voters given 28 May deadline to transfer election document collection between Malta and Gozo 40 new electric buses join the fleet in Malta and Gozo MALTA Public Transport is continuing to strengthen its sustainable mobility strategy through a €14 million invest- ment in 40 new fully electric buses, further expanding the company's commitment to cleaner and more efficient pub- lic transport across Malta and Gozo. With 35 electric buses already in service, the arrival of the additional vehicles will more than double the size of the com- pany's electric fleet. The rollout will also support plans for Gozo's public trans- port network to transition to- wards fully electric operations in the weeks ahead, with a number of the newly acquired buses ear- marked specifically for routes on the sister island. The new vehicles consist of 13 electric six-metre minibuses, 19 electric nine-metre buses and eight electric 12-metre buses. The smaller buses will primarily serve village cores and residen- tial areas, providing a more ag- ile and environmentally friendly transport solution within urban centres, while the larger vehi- cles will operate across the wider route network. This latest investment marks another major milestone in the ongoing transformation of Mal- ta's public transport system, placing greater emphasis on in- novation, operational efficiency and environmental sustainabili- ty. The additional electric buses are expected to reduce carbon emissions by a further 2,400 tonnes annually, contributing directly towards Malta's broader climate and sustainability objec- tives. Beyond their environmental benefits, electric buses offer a significantly improved jour- ney experience through quieter operation, smoother perfor- mance and enhanced onboard comfort. The investment will also strengthen operational ca- pacity across the network, al- lowing Malta Public Transport to respond more effectively to passenger demand through ad- ditional frequencies, increased seating availability and the po- tential introduction of new routes where required. Felipe Cosmen, Chairman of Malta Public Transport said: "Today we are proud because what we are presenting is not simply the introduction of new buses, but another milestone in a long journey of modernising public transport in Malta and improving the daily lives of those who depend on it". "From the outset, we under- stood that public transport is not just a service, but part of the country's daily rhythm and a key contributor to social, economic and environmental wellbeing," he added.
