9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 10 JUNE 2026 CULTURE ISLANDSCAPES is the 11th so- lo exhibition by Maltese artist Joanne Fenech Portelli. It brings together a collection of land- scape paintings inspired by the unique light, atmosphere, and character of Malta and Gozo. Most of the works have been painted en plein air, directly on location, reflecting Joanne's on- going exploration of the islands over the past three years. Drawn to both well known and overlooked scenes, Fenech Portelli said that she seeks beau- ty in places that might otherwise pass unnoticed, from wildflow- er filled fields to rugged coastal landscapes. Painting outdoors allows her to respond directly to changing weather, light, and mood, capturing not only the appearance of a location but al- so its spirit and emotional reso- nance. "Rather than simply docu- menting places, the paintings aim to convey a sense of place through colour, rhythm, and atmosphere, inviting viewers to see familiar landscapes from a fresh perspective," she said. Fenech Portelli said a special highlight of the exhibition is a series dedicated to Filfla, viewed from different vantage points and under varying conditions. "Having grown up in Qrendi, I have long been fascinated by the islet's constant presence on the horizon. In these works, Filfla becomes both subject and sym- bol, exploring themes of light, memory, and the ever-changing experience of the Maltese land- scape." IslandScapes celebrates the beauty of Malta's natural envi- ronment and encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the landscapes that shape our identity. The exhibition is open daily until 19 June 2026 at Palaz- zo Ferreria, Republic Street, Valletta, from 8am to 7pm, in- cluding weekends.
