The heritage watchdog has warned the development would extend into a protected landscape area safeguard- ing the setting of Malta's historic har- bour fortifications. In comments submitted as part of the Planning Authority consultation process, the SCH noted that the pro- posed development would encroach into an Area of High Landscape Val- ue (AHLV), specifically designated to protect the context and values of the scheduled harbour fortifications. The site also falls within the pro- posed buffer zone of Valletta as a UN- ESCO World Heritage Site, prompt- ing the heritage authority to flag the application for further scrutiny. The Electoral Commission received 42 nominations for the seven seats vacated by Alex Borg, Adrian Delia, Rebekah Borg, Stephen Spiteri, Mark Anthony Sammut, Conrad Borg Manche and Joe Giglio. Casual elections were held on the 3, 5, 7, 10 and 12 dis- tricts. There were two casual elections each on the 7 and 10 districts after Adrian Delia and Rebekah Borg both ceded their seat on the 7 District and Joe Giglio and Mark Anthony Sammut gave up their seat on the 10 District. The candidates elected through the casual election on Tuesday are George Vital Zammit, Andrew Agius, Gra- ham Bencini, Graziella Attard Previ, John Baptist Camilleri, Ian Vassallo Hagi and Stanley Zammit. Tuesday's casual elections come after the PL held its own casual elections last Friday. Following the second and last casual election, the final step of the 2026 General Election involved the announcement of the 12 women elected through the gender quota mechanism. The PL candidates elect- ed through the gender quota mechanism are Cressida Galea, Fleur Abela, Francesca Zarb, Yana Borg Debono Grech, Deborah Schembri, and Romil- da Zarb. Meanwhile, the PN can- didates elected through the mechanism are Bernice Bonel- lo, Julie Zahra, Norma Camill- eri, Annabelle Cilia, Marilena Gauci, and Miriana Calleja Te- staferrata De Noto.
