Sources confirmed the move to Mal- taToday, saying Farrugia will replace Jonathan Cardona, who died earlier this month. According to sources familiar with the matter, the decision comes after a fallout between Farrugia and Trans- port Minister Chris Bonett over con- cerns related to Bonett's attitude and managerial style. CONTINUES PAGE 3 WEDNESDAY EDITION KARL AZZOPARDI kazzopardi@mediatoday.com.mt Almost 11,000 suspicious transactions flagged in 2025 MATTHEW FARRUGIA mfarrugia@mediatoday.com.mt THE Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) report- ed a record 10,712 suspicious transaction reports (STRs) filed during 2025, represent- ing a 13.6% increase from the previous year. In a first for the FIAU, the highest number of reports came from crypto asset ser- vice providers, overtaking remote gaming operators. In fact, 2025 saw 3,712 reports from crypto asset service providers, up from 1,751 the previous year. The annual report also shows a steady yearly de- crease in reports from gam- ing operators since 2022. In 2022, the FIAU received 5,049 reports from such op- erators, with the number coming down to 3,022 last year. When it comes to intelli- gence disseminations, which refers to the sharing of ana- lysed financial information, the FIAU conducted 5,552 intelligence disseminations in 2025. The absolute ma- jority of this intelligence was handed to foreign financial intelligence units (FIU), as these accounted for 4,351 of the disseminations. Germany received the highest number of FIAU intelligence dissemi- nations with 473 reports sent, followed by Italy with 298. Another 450 disseminations were handed to the police, 493 were given to Maltese tax authorities, and 258 were spread among other Maltese authorities. Regarding the nature of the suspected crimes, the report notes that the reporting par- ties could not establish sus- pected offences 50% of the time.
