Carers for Stray and Aban- doned Felines (CSAF) is a non-profit organisation that cares for stray and abandoned cats, some of which are ill, re- covering from surgery, or un- dergoing treatment. On Tuesday, CSAF posted a video on Facebook showing several cats panting heavily in the heat and appearing visibly exhausted. The organisation appealed for immediate help in secur- ing a generator that could be borrowed or rented. It also asked anyone with contacts at Enemalta to help convey the urgency of the situation to the authorities. CSAF said its greatest con- cern was the shelter's medical rooms, where sick cats are kept in converted metal containers while they recover. These con- tainers rely on air conditioning to maintain a safe temperature. Without electricity, the med- ical rooms have become un- bearably hot and could amount to a "death sentence" for the vulnerable cats inside. "The rest of the shelter is al- so suffering," CSAF said. "With no electricity, we have no fans, no ventilation, and no way to keep our cats comfortable in this heat. Every hour that pass- es puts them at greater risk." Jeffrey Cassar was arraigned in court charged with threat- ening and insulting a magis- trate and a police sergeant, obstructing them from car- rying out their duties, caus- ing them to fear that violence would be used against them, and making threats that ex- ceeded the limits permitted by law. He was also charged with breaching a bail condition and recidivism. The court heard that Cassar was the subject of an arrest warrant related to unpaid al- imony. He had gone to the police station to sign the bail book when he was informed that he was under arrest. It was at that point that he lost control. Cassar began threatening and insulting the officers pres- ent, while also making threats directed at a magistrate and a police sergeant. He admitted to all the charg- es brought against him. The court sentenced Cassar to a €9,000 fine and also or- dered the forfeiture of €500 from his previous bail deposit. The prosecution was led by Inspector Clayton Camilleri, while lawyer Nicholas Mifsud appeared for the defence. Magistrate Yana Micallef Sta- frace presided over the case.
