The results show that 35% want to retain the prison sanction for wom- en who have an abortion, while 22% are undecided. A breakdown by political allegiance shows that 42.5% of PN voters and 41% of PL vot- ers favour depenalising abor- tion for women. Conversely, 35% of PN voters and 38% of PL voters favour retaining the prison penalty for women. The survey also shows that 41% of practising Catholics favour depenalisation as op- posed to 37% who do not. However, when it comes to doctors who carry out an abortion, a relative majority agree with retaining the four- year prison term. The survey shows that 38% want prison sentences for doctors to be removed from the law but 41% want to retain jailtime as a punishment. Over the past couple of years, two women were hand- ed down suspended prison sentences in Malta for undergoing an abortion, though one conviction was sub- sequently annulled on appeal. Both cases involved women who sought emergency medical care at Mater Dei Hospital for complications after taking abortive pills they purchased online. The women were reported to the police by the healthcare pro- fessionals, who treated them at hospital.
